Moving Do's and Don'ts

Okay let's break it down

Moving Do's and Don'ts: A Field Guide

Moving day has a way of turning even the calmest person into someone who argues with a mattress. We've seen it all, so here's what actually makes a move easier, and what just makes it a story you'll tell at parties (not the good kind).

Do's

  • Pack a "first night" box. Toothbrush, chargers, coffee, and something to sleep in. Future you will send flowers.
  • Label boxes by room, not by vibe. "Kitchen stuff" beats "misc" every single time.
  • Measure your doorways and your furniture before moving day, not during it.
  • Keep valuables and important documents with you, not in the truck.
  • Tell your movers about anything tricky upfront: a piano, a narrow staircase, a couch that's basically a load-bearing wall at this point.
  • Book your move before the last week of the month. Everyone else had the same idea you did.

Don'ts

  • Don't leave packing for the morning of. It never goes the way you imagine.
  • Don't try to carry the couch yourself "just to save time." That's how backs get retired early.
  • Don't overload boxes until they need their own gym membership. Heavy items go in small boxes.
  • Don't forget to empty, defrost, and dry your fridge and freezer the night before. Nobody wants that surprise on arrival.
  • Don't wing the parking situation. Check if your new place needs a permit or a heads up to the building.
  • Don't guess on pricing. Get it upfront so moving day doesn't come with a plot twist.

Moving will always ask a bit of you. It doesn't have to ask for your sanity too.
